DEFYING THE ODDS
Embracing Joy, Hope, and Healing in the Face of Illness

Having grown up navigating a major illness, I have experienced firsthand the physical, emotional, and spiritual toll that chronic illness can take—not only on the person diagnosed, but on their entire family. I understand the hospital rooms, the uncertainty, the fatigue, the isolation, and the quiet resilience required to keep going.

I was diagnosed with Gaucher Disease, a rare inherited genetic disorder in which the body cannot properly break down certain fats, causing them to accumulate in organs and bones. For me, treatment has meant weekly enzyme replacement infusions for most of my life. It means carefully managing my energy. It means prioritizing rest. It means being intentional about nutrition, stress management, and self-care. It means building my schedule around the realities of a condition that is often invisible to others.

And yet—it also means strength.

Over time, I’ve learned that while I could not control my diagnosis, I could influence my mindset. I could support my body through lifestyle and nutrition. I could choose joy even in uncertainty. I could embrace hope when the road felt long. That shift changed everything.
From a WISH Kid to Ms. Classic Universe, my journey is living proof that hope can carry you through what once felt impossible.

Today, as the reigning Ms. Classic Universe, I use my platform to shine a light on the invisible battles of chronic illness. Through storytelling, advocacy, and honest conversation, I connect with patients, caregivers, and families who are quietly carrying more than most people realize.

If you are living with chronic illness—or loving someone who is—I see you. You are not weak. You are not behind. You are not alone.

Defying the odds isn’t about pretending things aren’t hard. It’s about choosing to rise anyway
Tips & Resources
Living with chronic illness requires more than medical treatment—it requires daily empowerment. While every condition and every person is different, there are practical ways we can reclaim strength in the midst of uncertainty.

Here are a few principles that have transformed my own journey:

1. Advocate for Yourself - Ask questions. Seek second opinions when necessary. Learn about your condition. You are allowed to take an active role in your care. Empowerment begins with education.

2. Prioritize Nutrition & Lifestyle - For me, intentional nutrition (including nutrient-dense foods like fatty beef and bone broth), stress reduction, and consistent rest have made a significant difference in how I feel day-to-day. Healing is not one-size-fits-all, but supporting your body holistically matters.

3. Manage Stress with Compassion - Stress can deeply impact chronic conditions. As a single mother and business owner, this is something I continue to work on daily. Setting boundaries, asking for help, and giving yourself grace are not luxuries—they are necessities.

4. Build a Support System - No one is meant to walk illness alone. Whether it’s family, faith community, support groups, or trusted friends, surrounding yourself with people who understand makes the journey lighter.

5. Caregiver Support Matters Too - Caregivers often carry invisible burdens. If you are caring for someone who is sick, your emotional and physical well-being matters just as much. Seeking support is strength, not weakness.

6. Choose Joy Intentionally - Joy doesn’t ignore hardship—it exists alongside it. Small moments of gratitude, celebration, and connection create light even on difficult days.

Living with an illness can make us feel powerless. But when we take ownership of what we can control—our mindset, our habits, our support systems, our faith — we begin to reclaim strength in the face of uncertainty.
